Cedric Blanpain graduated as a Medical Doctor (1995), received his PhD in Medical Sciences (2001) and was board certified in internal medicine (2002) at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), Belgium. Cedric performed a postdoctoral training in the laboratory of Elaine Fuchs, at the Rockefeller University, New York, USA from 2002 to 2006.

Cedric Blanpain is full professor of Stem Cell and Development Biology and investigator of the WELBIO (Walloon Excellence in Life science and Biotechnology) at the IRIBHM, Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB). His research group is studying the mechanism regulating stem cell fate decision during embryonic development, tissue homeostasis and repair as well as the implication of stem cells during cancer initiation and growth.

Cedric Blanpain received several prestigious awards and fellowships including the career development award of the HFSP, EMBO young investigator, ERC starting grant, Outstanding Young Investigator Award of the International Society of Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) and is an EMBO member since 2012.

The Belgian FNRS, Fondation Contre Le Cancer, Fond Ithier, Region Wallone, Region Bruxelles-Capitale, the Human Science Frontier Program Organization, the EMBO young investigator program, and the European Research Council support his research.

Alexandra Van Keymeulen received a master in Chemistry from the Université Libre de Bruxelles (1996). She received a PhD in Chemistry from Université Libre de Bruxelles in 2000. Alexandra joined Henry Bourne Lab (University of California San Francisco, USA) as a postdoctoral fellow from 2002 to 2006.

Alexandra joined the laboratory in 2006 as a postdoctoral fellow and was appointed to a tenure position as Chercheur Qualifié of the FNRS in 2007. She is leading projects on breast cellular hierarchy and on the cells at the origin of breast cancers.

Peggy Sotiropoulou received her BSc in Biology from the University of Athens in 2000. She obtained her PhD in Cancer Immunology from the Medical School of the University of Crete in 2005. Peggy performed a short postdoctoral fellowship in Cancer Immunology and Immunotherapy Center of Athens until the end of 2006.

Peggy joined the laboratory in 2007 as a postodoctoral fellow and was appointed to a tenured position as chercheur qualifié of the FNRS in 2010. Peggy is studying the mechanisms of genome maintenance in skin stem cells and cancer stem cells.

Gaelle Lapouge obtained her PhD in Louis Pasteur Strasbourg I University in April 2007. During her PhD, she studied the role of a new class of androgen receptor variant in prostate cancer.

Gaelle joined our laboratory in December 2007 and she is studying the role of epidermal stem cells during skin cancer formation.


Marielle Ousset

Marielle Ousset obtained her PhD in the Institute of Pharmacology and Structural Biology, Toulouse III University, France, in July 2010. During her PhD, she studied the activation of DNA repair proteins in hypoxia and their role in the regulation of Hypoxia Inducible Factor-1.

Marielle joined our laboratory in January 2011 and she is studying the role of stem cells in mammary gland development and breast cancer formation.


Fabienne Lescroart, PhD

Fabienne Lescroart obtained her PhD in developmental biology in the Pasteur Institute, Paris, France, in September 2011. During her PhD, she studied the recruitment of second heart field progenitors during heart morphogenesis.

Fabienne joined our laboratory in January 2012 and she is interested in the cell lineage and behaviour of cardiac progenitors, expressing Mesp1, during the earliest steps of cardiogenesis.


Xionghui Lin, PhD

Xionghui Lin obtained his PhD in Comparative Physiology from Uppsala University, Sweden in 2010. After that, he worked in same University as a research associate from 2010-2012. Over the years, he has been working with Hematopoietic Stem Cells as well as Hematopoietic Growth Factors, which control fate decision of blood lineages in invertebrates.

With great interesting in Stem Cell research, Xionghui joined our laboratory in September 2012 as a postdoc fellow, funded by the Belgian FNRS. He is currently studying the transcriptional network involved in the fate determination of multipotent cardiovascular progenitor cells during embryonic stem cell differentiation and mouse heart development.

Adriana Sanchez-Danes obtained her PhD in Biomedicine from Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona, in May 2012. During her PhD, she focused on the generation of human dopaminergic neurons from induced pluripotent stem cells to model Parkinson’s disease.

Adriana joined our laboratory in August 2012 and she is studying the mechanisms involved in basal cell carcinoma initiation and progression.

Raj Giraddi did his PhD at the University of Cambridge, UK in 2013. He worked on the proliferation kinetics of mammary stem cells in Dr. John Stingl's lab.

Raj joined our laboratory in 2013 for his postdoctoral work on breast cancer stem cells.


Mathilde LATIL, PhD

Mathilde Latil obtained her PhD in cellular biology in the Pasteur Institute, Paris, France, in February 2013. During her PhD, she studied the resistance of muscle stem cells to severe hypoxia and anoxia.

Mathilde joined our laboratory in March 2013 and she is studying the origin of tumor heterogeneity in skin squamous cell carcinoma and also work to identify new genomic alterations in skin squamous cell carcinoma.

Federico Mauri received his Master degree in Medical biotechnology from the University of Trieste in 2006. He then joined the laboratory of prof. Jürgen Knoblich at the Institute of Molecular Biotechnology in Vienna, studying the mechanisms of asymmetric cell division in Drosophila melanogaster. Federico obtained his PhD in Molecular biology from the University of Vienna in 2011.

After one more year as post-doctoral fellow in the Knoblich lab, Federico joined the laboratory in 2013 to study the role of asymmetric cell division in the expansion of the cancer stem stell population and its impact on tumor progression.

Ievgenia Pastushenko graduated as a Medical Doctor in 2009 at the University of Zaragoza (Spain) and was board certified in Dermatology by the Spanish Ministry of Education in 2014.

She received her PhD in Medical Sciences at the University of Zaragoza (Spain) in collaboration with the Translational Cancer Research Unit of Antwerp (Belgium) in 2014. Ievgenia joined our laboratory in January 2015 and she is studying the mechanisms involved in squamous cell carcinoma initiation and progression.

Maylis Raphaël received her PhD from the University of Lille in 2014.

She worked on calcium signaling in skin homeostasis and prostate cancer in Prof. Natalia Prevarskaya’s lab. She joined our laboratory in April 2015 as a postdoctoral fellow to study skin squamous cell carcinoma initiation and progression.

Carole Mélin received her PhD from the University of Limoges in 2012.

She worked on colorectal cancer stem cells isolation and characterization. She performed a first postdoc for valorization of university research agency in Limousin where she studied colorectal cancer cells signature. She joined our laboratory in January 2016 as a postdoctoral fellow to study breast cancer initiation and progression mechanisms.

Manuel Zocco received his Master degree in Molecular Biology and Genetics in 2011 at the University of Pavia.

In November 2011, he joined the laboratory of Prof. Dr. Mario Halic at the Gene Center in Munich, where he studied the molecular basis of silencing and heterochromatin formation in Schizosaccharomyces pombe. He received his PhD in Biochemistry from the Ludwig-Maximilians Universität (LMU) in 2016. Manuel joined the lab in January 2016 and he is working on skin squamous cell carcinoma initiation and progression.

Audrey Brisebarre graduated from the National Institute of Applied Sciences (INSA) in Lyon, France, with a MSc in Bioinformatics and Modelling on July 2010.

She received her Master degree in Bioinformatics, Structural Biology and Genomics from Aix-Marseille University in 2011. Audrey received her PhD in Genomics and Bioinformatics from Aix-Marseille university in december 2014. Audrey joined our laboratory in January 2016 and she is performing bio informatics analysis of Gene regulation in development and cancers.

Andrea Karambelas received her BSc in Biology from the University of New Hampshire, USA in 2008. She obtained her Masters in Cancer Genomics and Developmental Biology from Utrecht University, NL in 2010.

Andrea joined our laboratory in January 2011 to begin a PhD program and she is studying the mechanisms regulating the maintenance of epithelial stem cell genome integrity.

Maud Debaugnies received her Medical Degree from Université Libre de Bruxelles in 2010. Maud is resident in trainee in the otorhinolaryngology and head and neck surgery department of CHU Saint Pierre.

After performing a rotation in our lab, Maud joined the laboratory in October 2011 and she is studying the role of cancer stem cell during cancer development and relapse after therapy. She is a recipient of the research fellowship of the association "Vesale found for research".

Aline Wuidart received a master degree in Biomedical Sciences in 2013 from the Universite Libre de Bruxelles (ULB).

After performing a rotation in our lab, she decided to start a PhD program as a research fellow of the FNRS since October 2013. Aline is interested in defining the molecular mechanisms that regulate the switch from multipotency to unipotency during the expansion of the mammary gland.

Farida Benhadou received her Medical Degree from Universite Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) in 2009. She completed her internship in Dermatology and Venereology in 2013 at Erasme Hospital.
