Cedric Blanpain graduated as a Medical Doctor (1995), received his PhD in Medical Sciences (2001) and was board certified in internal medicine (2002) at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), Belgium. Cedric performed a postdoctoral training in the laboratory of Elaine Fuchs, at the Rockefeller University, New York, USA from 2002 to 2006.

Cedric Blanpain is full professor of Stem Cell and Development Biology and investigator of the WELBIO (Walloon Excellence in Life science and Biotechnology) at the IRIBHM, Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB). His research group is studying the mechanism regulating stem cell fate decision during embryonic development, tissue homeostasis and repair as well as the implication of stem cells during cancer initiation and growth.

Cedric Blanpain received several prestigious awards and fellowships including the career development award of the HFSP, EMBO young investigator, ERC starting grant, Outstanding Young Investigator Award of the International Society of Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) and is an EMBO member since 2012.

The Belgian FNRS, Fondation Contre Le Cancer, Fond Ithier, Region Wallone, Region Bruxelles-Capitale, the Human Science Frontier Program Organization, the EMBO young investigator program, and the European Research Council support his research.

Alexandra Van Keymeulen received a master in Chemistry from the Université Libre de Bruxelles (1996). She received a PhD in Chemistry from Université Libre de Bruxelles in 2000. Alexandra joined Henry Bourne Lab (University of California San Francisco, USA) as a postdoctoral fellow from 2002 to 2006.

Alexandra joined the laboratory in 2006 as a postdoctoral fellow and was appointed to a tenure position as Chercheur Qualifié of the FNRS in 2007. She is leading projects on breast cellular hierarchy and on the cells at the origin of breast cancers.


Peggy Sotiropoulou

Peggy Sotiropoulou received her BSc in Biology from the University of Athens in 2000. She obtained her PhD in Cancer Immunology from the Medical School of the University of Crete in 2005. Peggy performed a short postdoctoral fellowship in Cancer Immunology and Immunotherapy Center of Athens until the end of 2006.

Peggy joined the laboratory in 2007 as a postodoctoral fellow and was appointed to a tenured position as chercheur qualifié of the FNRS in 2010. Peggy is studying the mechanisms of genome maintenance in skin stem cells and cancer stem cells.

Gaelle Lapouge obtained her PhD in Louis Pasteur Strasbourg I University in April 2007. During her PhD, she studied the role of a new class of androgen receptor variant in prostate cancer.

Gaelle joined our laboratory in December 2007 and she is studying the role of epidermal stem cells during skin cancer formation.

Benjamin Beck got his PhD in Medical Sciences from the Université des Sciences et Technologies de Lille1, in June 2007. Benjamin studied the role of TRP cationic channels in keratinocyte physiopathology Inserm U800, Lille, France.

Benjamin joined our laboratory in early 2008 to study the role of cancer stem cells during cancer growth and relapse after therapy.


Antoine Bondue

Antoine Bondue received his Medical Degree from Université Libre de Bruxelles in 2001. From 2001 to 2005, Antoine has been resident in the cardiology department of the Erasme Hospital. Antoine acquired his PhD degree in 2009 as a research fellow of the FNRS and completed his cardiology fellowship in 2010. He is now a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory, funded by the FNRS.

His work addresses the role of the early mesodermal transcription factor Mesp1 as a key regulator of cardiovascular progenitor specification and cardiovascular differentiation of pluripotent cells.


Gregory Driessens

Gregory Driessens received his master in Biomedical Sciences in 2001 and his Ph.D in 2006 from the Université Libre de Bruxelles. From 2006 to 2009, Gregory performed a postdoc in the lab of Tom Gajewski at the University of Chicago, USA.

Gregory obtained a fellowship from the Region Bruxelloise (Brain Back to Brussels) in 2009 and joins our lab to study and characterize the role of cancer stem cells during cancer initiation and growth.


Benjamin Drogat

Benjamin Drogat got his PhD in molecular and cell biology from the University of Bordeaux I in December 2005. Benjamin studied the effects of nutrient deprivations on tumoral angiogenesis and the implication of the ER stress, Inserm U1029, Talence, France. He performed a first postdoc in the department for Molecular Biomedical Research, VIB, Ghent, Belgium, where he studied the in vivo biological function of VEGF in the erythropoietic lineage commitment.

Benjamin joined our laboratory in January 2011 and he is studying the role of cancer stem cells in tumor progression.


Marielle Ousset

Marielle Ousset obtained her PhD in the Institute of Pharmacology and Structural Biology, Toulouse III University, France, in July 2010. During her PhD, she studied the activation of DNA repair proteins in hypoxia and their role in the regulation of Hypoxia Inducible Factor-1.

Marielle joined our laboratory in January 2011 and she is studying the role of stem cells in mammary gland development and breast cancer formation.


Dany Nassar, MD, PhD

Dany Nassar received his medical degree from Université Saint Joseph in Lebanon in 2002. From 2002 to 2007, he performed a residency then a fellowship in dermatology in university hospitals in Beirut and Paris. Dany acquired his PhD degree in 2011 from Université Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris working on skin wound healing.

He is now a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory funded by the French Society of Dermatology. His work aims to identify new genomic alterations in skin squamous cell carcinoma.

Agnieszka Checinska received her MSc in Biotechnology from the University of Wroclaw, Poland in 2002. She received her PhD in Biomedical Sciences from the Faculty of Medicine of the VU University Amsterdam, The Netherlands in 2007. Agnieszka performed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Dermatology at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center, Ann Arbor, USA and in the Spanish National Cancer Research Center (CNIO), Madrid, Spain from 2007-2011.

Agnieszka obtained the postdoctoral fellowship from FNRS/Televie and joined the laboratory in january 2012. She is studying the mechanisms regulating cancer stem cells in human carcinoma.


Fabienne Lescroart, PhD

Fabienne Lescroart obtained her PhD in developmental biology in the Pasteur Institute, Paris, France, in September 2011. During her PhD, she studied the recruitment of second heart field progenitors during heart morphogenesis.

Fabienne joined our laboratory in January 2012 and she is interested in the cell lineage and behaviour of cardiac progenitors, expressing Mesp1, during the earliest steps of cardiogenesis.

Ozdemirhan Sercin received his BS in Molecular Biology and Genetics from Bilkent University, Ankara, TURKEY in 2006. During his PhD, he worked on biochemical characterization and functions of Claspin in DNA Replication and in ATR-Chk1 pathway in Aziz Sancar Lab in UNC-CH. He received his doctorate in Biochemistry and Biophysics from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, NC, USA in May 2011.

Ozzy joined our laboratory in April 2012 and he is working on the role of aneuploidy in tumoral initiation and progression.

Vijayakumar Sukumaran obtained master degree in Pharmacy (Pharmaceutical chemistry) from Dr. MGR. Medical University, India in 2002 and worked as a lecturer at JSS University (India) as well as at INTI International University (Malaysia). During his PhD, he worked on angiotensin receptor antagonist potentially attenuates the development of heart failure after myosin-induced myocarditis in rats by modulating AT1 and mas receptor. He received his doctorate in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Niigata University of Pharmacy and Applied Life Sciences at Niigata City, Japan in March 2012. He has published 26 research articles in well reputed journals and also one book chapter in Advances in medicine and Biology (2012).

Vijay joined our laboratory in April 2012 and he is studying the molecular mechanisms involved in basal cell carcinoma.

Khalil Kass Youseff received a master degree in Biochemistry from the University of Damascus, Syria in 2003. Khalil performed a DEA in Biochemistry at Université Libre de Bruxelles from 2003 to 2005.

Khalil started a PhD program as a research fellow of the FNRS/FRIA in October 2006. Khalil is studying the role of epithelial stem cell during cancer initiation.


Xionghui Lin, PhD

Xionghui Lin obtained his PhD in Comparative Physiology from Uppsala University, Sweden in 2010. After that, he worked in same University as a research associate from 2010-2012. Over the years, he has been working with Hematopoietic Stem Cells as well as Hematopoietic Growth Factors, which control fate decision of blood lineages in invertebrates.

With great interesting in Stem Cell research, Xionghui joined our laboratory in September 2012 as a postdoc fellow, funded by the Belgian FNRS. He is currently studying the transcriptional network involved in the fate determination of multipotent cardiovascular progenitor cells during embryonic stem cell differentiation and mouse heart development.

Adriana Sanchez-Danes obtained her PhD in Biomedicine from Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona, in May 2012. During her PhD, she focused on the generation of human dopaminergic neurons from induced pluripotent stem cells to model Parkinson’s disease.

Adriana joined our laboratory in August 2012 and she is studying the mechanisms involved in basal cell carcinoma initiation and progression.

Guilhem Mascre obtained his MS at EPHE (Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes) in Paris, France.

After performing a rotation in the lab of P. Dotto, Lausanne, Switzerland, Guilhem joined the lab as graduate student in October 2008. Guilhem is interested in understanding cell lineage specification and homeostasis in the epidermis.

Samira Chabab received a master degree in Biomedical Sciences in 2010 from the Université Libre de Bruxelles.

After performing a rotation in our lab, she decided to start a PhD program as a research fellow of the FNRS/FRIA since October 2010. Samira is interested in defining the molecular mechanisms responsible for multipotent cardiovascular progenitor specification during the embryonic development in mice.
